Tornado

When a tornado watch is issued by the National Weather Service indicating that conditions are favorable for tornado formation somewhere in our county, continue your normal routine and stay alert in case critical alerts are issued.

When a tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service indicating that a tornado has been sighted or identified by radar, and campus is within the tornado polygon, you will be notified through the critical alert system to shelter in place immediately.

Tornado Warning Checklist

Take shelter.
  • Enter the nearest building and stay away from windows and doors.
  • If you cannot get indoors before a tornado strikes, lie flat in a ditch or depression and protect your head.
  • Stay away from large trees, metal poles, and other electrical conductors.
  • Do not use a vehicle as shelter.
Secure your location.
  • Close classroom, hall, or office doors.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Continue to shelter in place until an All Clear has been issued.
Monitor your location.
  • Watch for critical alert updates.
  • Report injury or damage to Safety and Security.
  • Avoid damaged areas.
  • Even after an All Clear has been issued, use continued caution since tornado development may still be possible and additional alerts may be issued.
