Lightning

Lightning is more frequent in Florida than anywhere else in the U.S., and it can be deadly or cause serious injury. It may develop from severe thunderstorms or hurricanes and can strike as far as ten miles from the edge of a storm, even without rain. If you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Fast response is necessary for your safety.

Response Checklist

If you’re outdoors
  • When you hear thunder, go inside and remain indoors if possible.
  • If you must go outside, move quickly between buildings when lightning is less frequent.
  • Follow instructions of coaches, lifeguards, faculty, and Security. Key individuals receive official lightning alerts and are required to clear outdoor areas according to established protocols.
If you’re swimming at the pool
  • Get out of the pool at the first sound of thunder.
  • Move into the locker room. Do not wait near the pool.
If you’re on a recreational field
  • Leave the field and seek shelter, whether you are a spectator, involved in collegian team practice, or using the field for personal recreation.
  • Do not shelter under trees, power lines, or metal bleachers.
  • Games will be postponed when lightning approaches.
If you’re at West Campus
  • Bring your boat or paddleboard to shore at the first sound of thunder.
  • Seek shelter. Do not shelter under trees.
